Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, now 92, continues to inspire music lovers across the world with her unmatched energy and versatility. On her special milestone, filmmaker Muzaffar Ali revisited memories of his 1981 classic Umrao Jaan and shared why Bhosle’s artistry was vital to the film’s enduring soundtrack.
Many expected Umrao Jaan’s music to feature Lata Mangeshkar, given the film’s ghazal-driven theme. But Ali envisioned something different.
“The film required a fragrance that went beyond conventional Hindi cinema. Ashaji, though not widely linked with ghazals, was ready to step into the soul of the character and alter her approach,” Ali recalled.
It was this willingness to experiment, reshape her singing style, and step outside her comfort zone that convinced him she was the perfect choice.
The music of Umrao Jaan was a deeply collaborative process involving lyricist Shahryar, composer Khayyam, and Asha Bhosle herself. Ali remembered spending hours working with her to ensure each note carried the right emotional depth.
“Her ability to lower her pitch, reimagine phrasing, and bring freshness into every rendition was remarkable. The dedication and time she invested are rare among artists,” he said.
The outcome was extraordinary Bhosle’s soulful renditions not only won hearts but also earned her the National Award for Best Playback Singer.
From classical-inspired ghazals to chart-topping film songs, Asha Bhosle has mastered every musical shade. Even in her 90s, she remains actively connected to her art, performing with the same passion that defined her early career.
Her journey is more than a musical career it is a lifelong celebration of song, one that continues to resonate across generations and keeps her admirers eagerly awaiting every new performance.
