It was predicted in this column yesterday that Rajkummar Rao – Bhumi Pednekar starrer Badhaai Do will open in Rs. 1-2 crores range. This is what happened as Rs. 1.65 crores came in.
A similar LGBTQ+ subject and genre film Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui had taken a start of Rs. 3.75 crores exactly two months back and at that time the restrictions were much lesser and theatres had already been open for a few weeks. In the case of Badhaai Do, it is all about bringing audiences back to theatres so whatever start that it has taken is fair enough to at least get some sort of momentum.
The nice part is that the film has got average to good reviews, which means there is a possibility of word of mouth catching up amongst audiences. There is no competition either, and for the big multiplexes in major cities, there is the possibility of growth been evidenced.
When Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui was playing last year, it had grown from Rs. 3.75 crores to Rs. 4.87 crores Saturday. Though Badhaai Do won’t touch this kind of number on Saturday, even if it goes past the Rs. 3 crores mark then it would be almost double the growth, which would mean overall a better jump. That should allow the Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar starrer to have some sort of a run in days to come.
